Belize Expresses Solidarity as Search Continues After Guyana Ferry Tragedy

Belize has joined the region in expressing solidarity with Guyana as an extensive search-and-rescue operation continues following the capsizing of a passenger ferry. The vessel departed Georgetown late Saturday, July 18, carrying 116 passengers and 17 crew members. According to the latest figures cited by the Government of Belize, the ferry encountered rough waves and capsized with 133 people aboard.  Sixty-seven people had reportedly been rescued, while emergency teams continued searching for the remaining passengers and crew members. Authorities have mobilized a major operation in the hope of locating those still missing.  Prime Minister John Briceño, on behalf of the Government and people of Belize, extended prayers for the safe recovery of those who remain unaccounted for. He also offered words of comfort to the families anxiously awaiting information about their loved ones.  The Government says the thoughts of the Belizean people remain with Guyana as the country confronts the tragedy and continues its rescue efforts.
