Belize’s public transportation system is set for a major upgrade as the Government of Belize explores the possible acquisition of 150 new buses to improve commuter safety, comfort, and reliability across the country. The announcement came on the heels of a visit to Taiwan and South Korea by Minister of Transportation, Dr. Louis Zabaneh. He spoke on his visit, and how the large-scale acquisition forms part of the administration’s broader plan to modernize Belize’s national bus fleet and strengthen connectivity between towns, villages, and cities.

Dr. Louis Zabaneh, Minister of Transport: “We’re seeking to renew the entire bus fleet that runs on our national highways. About 150 new buses that we’re working to procure under the new company, the new public-private partnership that you know we’ve been discussing in the media. We also visited South Korea, we visited Hyundai and a company called KGM and also discussing the possibilities of procuring buses from them. So along with TRON, the one company in Taiwan and the other one in Taiwan called MASTER, we’re now getting all the information we need on what will best fit the needs here in Belize.”
Dr. Zabaneh noted that the acquisition would occur under the private public partnership, and that the new fleet would replace outdated buses and introduce higher standards for maintenance and road safety.
