Belize Hosts Regional Workshop to Strengthen Competition Law Framework

Belize has partnered with regional and international organizations to strengthen its legal framework for fair competition, hosting a three-day capacity-building workshop in Belmopan from February 10 to 12.  The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade is collaborating with the CARICOM Competition Commission and the Commonwealth Secretariat to help develop Belize’s national competition law in keeping with obligations under the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas.  The sessions bring together government officials, regulators, and stakeholders to review international best practices, regional case studies, and policy approaches aimed at modernizing Belize’s trade and competition environment. Discussions are also focused on protecting consumers, encouraging innovation, and creating a level playing field for businesses.  Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Marconi Leal Junior, says the initiative marks an important step toward strengthening economic governance.

Organizers say the collaboration lays the groundwork for a robust competition regime designed to support sustainable growth and deeper regional integration, while aligning Belize’s policies with international standards./
