Belize’s presence on the international parliamentary stage was highlighted this week, as the National Assembly took part in a major global forum in Europe. Minister Dr. Osmond Martinez represented Belize at the 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, held last week in Istanbul, Türkiye. The high-level gathering brought together parliamentarians from around the world, including key bodies such as the Governing Council, Standing Committees, and forums focused on women and young parliamentarians. Central to the Assembly was a general debate held under the theme “Nurturing hope, securing peace and ensuring justice for future generations.” Delegates used the platform to discuss global challenges and strengthen parliamentary cooperation on issues ranging from peacebuilding to sustainable development. Discussions also focused on the role of parliaments in post-conflict recovery, as well as economic issues such as reducing trade barriers, addressing corporate tax avoidance, and promoting a fair and sustainable global economy. A major highlight of the Assembly was the historic election of Anda Filip of Romania as the ninth Secretary General of the IPU, the first woman to hold the position in the organization’s 137-year history. She secured 72 percent of the vote and is set to assume office on June 30. During the Assembly, Dr. Martinez extended congratulations to Filip on behalf of Prime Minister John Briceño, Valerie Woods, his parliamentary colleagues, and the people of Belize.
