Belize Joins WTO Advisory Centre to Strengthen Trade Legal Capacity

Belize has moved to strengthen its presence and capacity within the global trading system, following a high-level engagement at the World Trade Organization in Geneva, Switzerland.  The Belize Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade announced that Gianni Avila, Belize’s Ambassador to Belgium and Representative to the WTO, has signed the Protocol of Accession for Belize to become a full member of the Advisory Centre on World Trade Organization Law.  With this accession, Belize will now have access to specialised legal advice, technical assistance, and policy guidance on matters related to WTO law and dispute settlement. Officials say the move will enhance Belize’s ability to defend its trade interests, navigate complex trade negotiations, and strengthen compliance with international trade rules.  The Ministry notes that full membership in the Advisory Centre represents a strategic investment in Belize’s trade diplomacy, particularly as the country continues to engage in global and regional trade discussions affecting market access, development, and economic resilience.  The signing took place in Geneva and forms part of Belize’s broader diplomatic engagement aimed at strengthening international partnerships and ensuring that the country is well-equipped to participate effectively in the multilateral trading system.
