The Association of Justices of the Peace and Commissioners of the Supreme Court has expanded its presence in the United States with the establishment of a Florida chapter. The new chapter was officially formed during a swearing-in ceremony held in Miramar, Florida, on July 10. The first cohort comprises eight Belizean Americans who were sworn in by the association’s national president, Adrian “Danny” Madrid. Among the newly appointed Justices of the Peace are Carl Diaz, Dawn Diaz, Michael Devin Young Jr. and Richard Moody. Madrid says expanding the association’s reach through overseas chapters is one of its key objectives, particularly in areas with established Belizean communities. The Florida chapter is the second to be established in the United States.
Adrian Danny Madrid, President, Justice of the Peace Association: “We have been trying to open more chapters, especially in the USA. We only have one in California which we did in 2020. And since then we were not able to open more chapters. We have 10 chapters countrywide, in Belize City and one in LA. And now we’re here to swear in these AJPs and also to open a new chapter in the city of Miramar, here in Florida. So we have now a Florida chapter. We swore in eight new JPs who applied and lived up to all the requirements that are required of us. They send in the police records which is important. And the only thing left for them is to do the training. So those persons did apply, it was sent to the Ministry of the Attorney General and was vetted by the association and then they were approved. And at the ceremony, the Solicitor General did the actual swearing in and I spoke to the JPs about the role they play, especially here in Florida.”
The association expects the new chapter to provide Belizeans in Florida with greater access to JP services while strengthening community engagement and connections with Belize. This eight-member cohort was formally inducted during the Miramar ceremony.
