Belize is taking a bold step toward protecting its environment, with the launch of its very first National Earth Day Fair, held under the theme “Our Power, Our Planet.” The inaugural event, spearheaded by the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Climate Change in collaboration with the Protected Areas Conservation Trust, brought together environmental advocates, students, and members of the public for a day focused on sustainability and climate action. The opening ceremony featured a keynote address from UNICEF Representative Sajid Ali, who emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in safeguarding the environment, particularly for future generations.
Also taking the stage was Executive Director of PACT, Abil Castaneda, who delivered an inspiring call for stronger environmental stewardship and highlighted the urgent need for sustainable practices across all sectors. The event also recognized four environmental champions for their outstanding contributions to conservation and sustainability efforts in Belize, celebrating individuals who continue to lead by example in protecting the country’s natural resources. Throughout the day, attendees engaged in dynamic panel discussions and explored a vibrant public fair, featuring booths and interactive displays promoting eco-friendly practices and environmental awareness. Organizers say the National Earth Day Fair is just the beginning of a broader push to encourage Belizeans to adopt everyday actions that contribute to a healthier planet, reinforcing the message that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility./
