Belize Makes Bid for UNESCO Documentary Heritage

Belize is seeking regional recognition for a part of the country’s documentary heritage through UNESCO’s Memory of the World Programme.  The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization says Belize submitted one nomination for consideration under the 2026 Memory of the World Regional Register for Latin America and the Caribbean.  UNESCO has not yet publicly identified the Belizean document or collection included in the nomination. If successful, it would be recognised for its historical and cultural significance and the importance of preserving it for future generations.  The Memory of the World Programme focuses on safeguarding valuable documentary material. This can include manuscripts, government and historical records, photographs, recordings, films and important library or archival collections.  Belize’s submission is among a record eighty-seven nominations received from twenty-three participating countries and territories. That represents an increase of twenty-one percent when compared with the number submitted in 2025.  Brazil submitted the largest number with eighteen, followed by Colombia with eleven and Argentina with ten. Several Caribbean countries are also participating, including Dominica, Jamaica, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago.  The nominations will be assessed during the twenty-sixth annual meeting of UNESCO’s Regional Memory of the World Committee. That meeting is expected to take place around November, although the exact date and venue have not yet been confirmed.
