Belize Named Among Top Tax-Friendly Retirement Destinations

A new international report highlighting tax-friendly destinations for retirees is placing Belize among a list of countries where foreign income is not taxed, an inclusion that reflects the country’s growing appeal to expatriates, while also raising broader considerations for Belize’s economy and policy direction.  According to the report, Belize operates under a territorial tax system, meaning that income earned outside the country is not subject to local taxation. This places Belize alongside several Central American and Caribbean nations that have adopted similar frameworks to attract foreign residents, retirees, and investors.  For Belize, this feature is often promoted as a competitive advantage, particularly when combined with its English-speaking population, established residency programs, and natural environment. The report notes that Belize’s Qualified Retired Persons (QRP) program is among the more accessible pathways for foreigners seeking residency.  Regionally, Belize is listed alongside countries such as Panama, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua, all of which employ similar territorial tax structures. Meanwhile, Caribbean jurisdictions like Bahamas and Cayman Islands go even further by imposing no income tax at all.
