For the fourth consecutive year, Belizeans observed January 15 as a public and bank holiday in remembrance of the Right Honourable George Cadle Price, the nation’s National Hero and founding leader of the People’s United Party (PUP). The occasion was marked yesterday morning with a commemorative ceremony held on Queen Street, outside the PUP Secretariat, where PUP supporters, elected officials, and senior government representatives gathered to honor Price’s life and legacy. The ceremony, which began shortly after 10:00 a.m., formed part of official George Price Day activities organized by the National Celebrations Commission in collaboration with the National Institute of Culture and History. Delivering a tribute was PUP Chairman Henry Charles Usher, Price’s grandnephew, who reflected on the enduring values that guided Price’s leadership. Usher highlighted Price’s faith, his confidence in the Belizean people, and his vision for a sovereign, self-determined, and prosperous Belize.
Prime Minister John Briceño also addressed the gathering, noting that the modern People’s United Party continues to stand on the foundation laid by George Price. He said Price’s sacrifices and vision established the political and democratic framework that Belizeans continue to benefit from today.
January 15 was officially designated a public and bank holiday in 2021, following a proposal introduced in the House of Representatives by Minister Kareem Musa, which was subsequently approved by Parliament, gazetted, and took effect that same year./
