After becoming the first country in the world to declare robotics an official sport, Belize is continuing its push to develop the programme as a tool for education, job preparation and economic growth. That effort was highlighted earlier this month at the first Caribbean STEM Engine for Economic Development, or SEED, Summit. The regional event brought together educators, researchers, businesspeople, investors and government officials to discuss how science and technology can create jobs and strengthen Caribbean economies. Belize was represented by Jamie Lee Chanona Usher, President of the Belize Robotics Federation and Vice Principal of Student Affairs at Saint Catherine Academy. She presented Belize’s “Robotics as a Sport” initiative as a practical model that other Caribbean countries can adopt. The programme treats robotics much like a traditional sport. Students receive coaching, practise regularly, work in teams and participate in competitions. In the process, they develop skills in technology, leadership, communication, creativity and problem-solving. Usher says robotics goes beyond building and programming machines. It prepares students with practical skills they can use in the workplace and other areas of their lives.
During the summit, Belize encouraged other Caribbean countries to introduce similar programmes. Participants also discussed artificial intelligence, business development, teacher training and ways of making technology education available to more students. Belize’s robotics programme has received support through partnerships involving the government, the Ministry of E-Governance, schools and other national organizations. The initiative seeks to connect classroom learning with real-world experience while preparing young Belizeans for new industries and employment opportunities. The summit concluded with Caribbean leaders committing to closer cooperation in science, education, entrepreneurship and technology./
