Belize River Valley Farmers Get Climate-Smart Crop Training

Twenty-five farmers from Belize River Valley communities received training today in climate-smart corn and peanut production.  The session, held at Swift Garden in Bermudian Landing, was conducted by the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute and sponsored by CRESAP under the Belize District Agriculture Department’s Training Plan. Farmers learned improved planting methods, soil and moisture management, and techniques for controlling pests and diseases.  The training also encouraged crop diversification. Adding corn and peanuts could provide farmers with new sources of food and income while reducing their dependence on a single crop during difficult weather conditions.  The initiative forms part of efforts to promote sustainable farming and strengthen agricultural production in the Belize River Valley.
