Belize’s Domestic Banks Join National Credit Bureau Network

Belize’s domestic banks are now connected to the CRIF Credit Bureau, a development expected to strengthen how lenders assess credit applications and expand responsible access to financing for individuals and businesses.  The announcement was made by Filippo Alario, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Belize Bank Limited, who also serves as President of the Belize Bankers Association. Alario says the move represents a major step toward a more transparent and inclusive credit system in Belize.  Under the arrangement, banks will be able to use shared credit information to make more informed lending decisions. The expectation is that this will help reduce risk, improve the quality of loan portfolios, and give more people and businesses a clearer path to accessing credit based on their repayment history.  Alario credited the collaboration of the country’s domestic banks, including Atlantic Bank Limited, Heritage Bank Limited, National Bank of Belize Limited, as well as the Central Bank of Belize.  The Belize Bank CEO also used the announcement to reflect on the wider digital transformation underway within the banking sector. He says modernization is not simply about purchasing new technology, but requires institutions to change long-standing work practices, invest in capable staff, carefully select long-term technology partners, and establish strong project-management systems.  According to Alario, Belize Bank is currently advancing several major programmes involving digital banking channels, payment systems, compliance technology and data infrastructure. He says the goal is to improve client experiences and bring local banking services closer to global standards.
