Belize’s economy grew by one point four percent during the second quarter of this year, while consumer prices rose by an average of two-point nine percent over the first eight months. The Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) presented the findings at a press conference this morning. Growth in wholesale and retail trade, public administration and other services helped Belize’s economy expand during the second quarter of this year, despite declines in manufacturing, agriculture and construction. Between April and June, the country produced goods and services valued at one point three eight-eight billion dollars. That was eighteen point nine million dollars, or one point four percent, more than in the same period last year. Services remained the largest sector, generating eight hundred and eighty-five point three million dollars and growing by three-point four percent. Wholesale and retail trade made the strongest contribution to growth among the service industries, followed by public administration and defence. Information and communication, health and social work, and other service activities also contributed positively. SIB statistician Christopher Hulse explained economic performance.
