Belize’s First Female Mayor Daisy Marin Dies

Corozal Town is mourning the loss of one of its most respected civic leaders and business pioneers tonight following the passing of former Mayor Daisy Olga Marin. Marin, who made history as Belize’s first female mayor, passed away this week, prompting tributes from political leaders, residents, and members of the business community across the country. In a statement issued today, the People’s United Party described Marin as a trailblazer whose contributions helped shape the development of Corozal Town and inspired generations of women in leadership.  Marin was elected mayor of Corozal Town in the nineteen-eighty-one municipal elections under the banner of the People’s United Party, becoming the first woman in Belize to hold the office of mayor. During her tenure, she was credited with helping to modernize and advance the municipality during a period of growth and transition for northern Belize.  Beyond politics, Marin was also widely recognized as a successful entrepreneur and community advocate. According to the PUP, she opened and managed the very first auto parts business in Corozal Town in nineteen-sixty-four, paving the way for future local business ventures in the district.  Her decades of public service extended far beyond municipal leadership. Marin served on numerous boards and committees, including Helpage Corozal and the Belize Red Cross. She also held the positions of Senior Justice of the Peace and Commissioner of the Supreme Court, roles that reflected her longstanding involvement in civic and legal affairs.  Over the years, Marin received several recognitions for her service to the Corozal community, including the prestigious Order of Distinction Award for her contributions to public life and national development.
