Belize Says Taiwan Flyover Statement Was General Support, Not a Local Issue


Belize’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade has provided clarity on a brief and vague statement issued earlier today, which raised concern over reported external pressure related to a presidential flyover involving the Republic of China (Taiwan).  The initial statement prompted questions given its timing, coinciding with Taiwan’s ongoing goodwill visit to Belize.  However, Love News has since received a response from Foreign Minister Francis Fonseca, who explained that the release was a general expression of support for Taiwan and not tied to any local development.  Fonseca stated, quote, that it was “just a statement in support of Taiwan and a rejection of any attempt by China to pressure countries who allow the plane of the Taiwanese President to fly through their airspace.” He further emphasized that the issue arises several times throughout the year and that Belize consistently voices its concern.  Importantly, Fonseca clarified that the matter “had nothing to do with Belize,” underscoring that the statement was not in response to any specific situation involving Belizean airspace or authorities.
