Belize Set to Name First Woman National Hero

Belize is expected to mark a historic first at this year’s Tribute to Belizean Patriots, with the country’s first woman National Hero set to be officially named.  Love News understands that the announcement will form part of the annual awards ceremony scheduled for later this week. The identity of the woman selected for the country’s highest national honour has not yet been officially disclose, but the designation would expand a small and distinguished group.  To date, Belize has formally recognized two men as National Heroes, namely, the Father of the Nation, George Cadle Price and Philip Goldson. The Tribute to Belizean Patriots is held annually during the September Celebrations to honour Belizeans whose service, leadership and contributions have helped to advance the country. The existing national honours include the Order of the National Hero, the Order of Belize, the Order of Distinction and the Meritorious Service Award.  For last year, one of the highlights was the recognition of Belize’s 1974 “Golden Girls”, the national softball team that delivered the country’s first international gold medal. Love News understands that this year’s ceremony will also recognize people who contributed to Belize’s independence movement. The awards are expected to acknowledge those whose efforts supported the country’s political development and its journey from British colonial rule to Independence on September 21, 1981.
