Belize Suspends Parcel Shipments to European Union

Belizeans looking to send parcels to countries within the European Union will have to wait a little longer. The Belize Postal Service has announced the immediate temporary suspension of accepting and processing postal shipments containing goods destined for EU member states, following significant changes to European Union import regulations.  According to the Ministry of Public Utilities, Energy and Logistics, the suspension comes after the European Union abolished its duty-free de minimis threshold for imported goods, introducing new customs clearance and taxation requirements for international mail entering EU countries. As a result, the Belize Postal Service is awaiting official operational guidance and implementation procedures from the Universal Postal Union to ensure that all outbound shipments comply with the new regulations.  Customers intending to send merchandise to any European Union destination are advised to postpone their shipments until further notice. However, postal officials say mail items that were accepted before the announcement will continue to be processed under the existing procedures wherever possible.  The Belize Postal Service says it is working closely with its international postal partners and the Universal Postal Union to establish the necessary operational processes required under the new European framework.
