Protecting Belize’s marine resources while supporting the people who depend on them is the goal of the Belize Sustainable Ocean Plan. Known as the BSOP, the plan provides a framework for managing activities in Belize’s waters, from fishing and tourism to conservation and future Blue Economy opportunities. During Friday’s sitting of the House of Representatives, Prime Minister John Briceño said the initiative is an important step toward safeguarding those resources and creating opportunities for future generations.
The Prime Minister told the House that managing Belize’s ocean requires careful planning as the country deals with climate change, coastal development and threats to marine ecosystems. The government says the plan was developed through stakeholder consultation and is intended to guide decisions affecting the marine environment. Mesopotamia Area Representative Lee Mark Chang, however, questioned aspects of the initiative, raising concerns about transparency, implementation and its potential impact on Belizeans whose livelihoods depend on the sea.
Chang said environmental protection must also take into account the needs of fishermen, tourism operators and coastal communities. He argued that those who depend on marine resources must have a meaningful voice in decisions affecting their work. This particular bill created an upset with the opposition, not for its content but for the late submission for review. UDP’s Lee Mark Chang registered what he coins as an unfair move by the government.
