Belize is set to strengthen its agricultural value-added sector following the signing of an Implementation Arrangement for the Belize Agricultural Product Processing Innovation and Incubation Project. The agreement was signed on Sunday by Ambassador Lily Hsu and Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and New Growth Industries Rodwell Ferguson. The initiative will support Belize in developing agro-processing capacity and transforming locally grown produce into higher-value products. Officials say the project is designed to move the country beyond raw produce exports by improving processing techniques, introducing modern technology, and expanding opportunities for farmers and small agri-entrepreneurs. Belize produces a wide variety of high-quality fruits and vegetables, but much of it is exported or sold fresh. Taiwan, which has long partnered with Belize on agriculture, brings technical expertise in food processing, innovation, and agricultural technology. Through the collaboration, both countries aim to enhance processing and preservation methods; support small producers and agro-processors; increase market competitiveness and improve farmers’ income and livelihoods. Government representatives say the initiative aligns with national efforts to modernize agriculture, encourage entrepreneurship, and strengthen food security by ensuring more local produce can be processed domestically rather than lost or exported without added value.
