Belize Takes Pro Tempore Presidency of ERDI

Belize has taken over the Pro Tempore Presidency of the Ad Hoc Group responsible for implementing the Central American Integration System Regional Digital Strategy, known as ERDI, for the six-month period from July to December 2026.  The Ministry of E-Governance will lead Belize’s participation, with Acting Director John Robateau serving as president of the regional group. Belize succeeds the Dominican Republic, which previously led work in areas including cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and institutional strengthening.  Robateau says Belize will use the presidency to push for greater regional cooperation in digital transformation, arguing that technology must be treated as more than a technical issue. Belize’s agenda will focus on strengthening regional cybersecurity, improving digital interoperability among member states and advancing the responsible use of artificial intelligence. One major priority will be the cross-border recognition of electronic signatures, which could make it easier for people and businesses to complete official procedures and commercial transactions across SICA countries.  The government says it will also support the development of AI tools that are based on regional data and guided by shared ethical standards, rather than relying only on systems designed for other parts of the world.  Belize says it will work with SICA member states, development partners, the private sector and civil society to carry forward the ERDI Action Plan for 2024 to 2026, with the aim of improving digital inclusion, regional competitiveness and cooperation.
