Belize is set to assume a key regional leadership role in migration management when it takes over the Pro Tempore Presidency of the Commission of Migration Authorities of the Member Countries of the Central American Integration System, OCAM, on July 1. The six-month presidency will place Belize at the forefront of regional efforts in migration governance, border management, and humanitarian mobility across Central America. The Department of Border Management and Immigration Services officially received the presidency on June eleventh during a meeting in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. Belize was represented by Director Lawrence Thompson. As OCAM President, Belize will guide regional migration initiatives, strengthen cooperation among member states, and support the implementation of the organization’s Strategic Plan through twenty-thirty. The presidency will operate under the theme “Advancing Smart Border Management and Regional Information Sharing for Secure, Humane, and Efficient Mobility.” According to Thompson, Belize will focus on improving cooperation, strengthening information sharing, and enhancing systems that support safe and efficient movement across the region. Three key priorities have been outlined: digital modernization and interoperability, integrated border management for regional security, and the promotion of human rights and humanitarian border management. A special OCAM Presidency Steering Committee will be established to coordinate activities, monitor progress, and engage stakeholders, while port commanders and frontline officers will also provide operational support and data reporting. Belize’s presidency runs from July first to December thirty-first this year, with the Department of Border Management and Immigration Services saying further details on upcoming activities will be announced in the coming weeks.
