The Belize Tax Service has announced that all persons importing goods into the country must now possess and present a valid Tax Identification Number, or TIN. The requirement took effect on February 2 and applies to all categories of importers, including one-time and irregular importers, members of the Belizean diaspora returning to reside in Belize, and participants in the Qualified Retirement Program. Officials say the measure is intended to strengthen compliance and improve monitoring of import activities nationwide. Persons who do not yet have a TIN are being advised to register online through the IRIS Belize platform. The Tax Service notes that the process is available 24 hours a day and encourages applicants to complete registration ahead of time to avoid delays when clearing goods. The department also says assistance is available through its offices countrywide, including Belize City, Belmopan, San Ignacio, Orange Walk, Corozal, Dangriga, Punta Gorda and San Pedro. Authorities are urging importers to comply with the new requirement to ensure uninterrupted importation and customs processing.
