Belize to Establish Office of Radiation Safety and Security

The Government of Belize says that the establishment of an Office of Radiation Safety and Security is as much about local safety as it is about meeting international obligations. In the most recent Cabinet briefing, the Briceno Administration announced that the office will be established to provide regulatory oversight for all activities involving ionizing radiation, ensuring that everything from medical procedures to industrial uses is conducted with strict safety protocols. Apart from meeting Belize’s obligations as a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, the office would also safeguard the health and well-being of all Belizeans. Today, Minister of Governance Henry Charles Usher weighed in on the matter, saying that there are various industries in Belize that use radioactive materials, which underscores the need for the office.

When established, the office will operate under the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change, and Solid Waste Management.
