Belize Unveils New National Symbols Coin Series

The Central Bank of Belize has unveiled the designs for Belize’s new National Symbols Coin Series.  The new coins, which were minted by the Royal Canadian Mint, are expected to enter circulation in September. The one-dollar coin will prominently feature the map of Belize, while the other five denominations will showcase national symbols.  According to the Central Bank, the launch complements the 2025 National Heroes banknote series and helps create a more unified Belizean national currency.  The new coins will circulate alongside the current coins bearing the image of the late Queen Elizabeth the Second, which will remain legal tender. The Central Bank says members of the public will not need to exchange or deposit their existing coins, as the older series will gradually phase out over time.  While the new series will retain the familiar sizes and general characteristics of the existing denominations, several changes are being introduced. These include updated metal compositions aimed at improving cost efficiency and durability, as well as the use of nickel-plated and bronze-plated steel, which will result in slight weight variations.  The one-cent coin will also feature a distinctive ten-sided edge, while the one-dollar coin will have a bronze appearance.  The Central Bank has emphasized that the introduction of the new coins will not affect the value of Belize’s currency, which remains fixed at two Belize dollars to one US dollar.  To mark the launch, the Central Bank will also issue a limited-edition painted fifty-cent collector’s coin featuring the Mahogany Tree. That commemorative coin will be sold as a numismatic item and will not enter general circulation.
