Belize Zoo Launches 2026 Sharon Matola Conservation Scholarship

The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center is once again investing in the next generation of environmental leaders through the 2026 Sharon Matola Conservation Scholarship.

The annual scholarship program, which was launched in 2023 during the Belize Zoo’s fortieth anniversary celebrations, honors the legacy of the zoo’s late founder, Sharon Matola. The initiative was created to support young Belizean women pursuing careers in conservation and the protection of the country’s natural resources.  Under the program, one Belizean woman will receive up to ten thousand Belize dollars in tuition assistance to pursue undergraduate studies in the natural sciences. Eligible areas of study include Biology, Natural Resource Management, and Environmental Science at any tertiary institution in Belize.  According to the Belize Zoo, applicants must submit a letter addressed to the Sharon Matola Conservation Scholarship Committee outlining their professional goals, philosophies, and interest in environmental protection. The letter must be between three hundred and five hundred words. Applicants are also required to submit copies of transcripts from high school or junior college, a recommendation letter, an acceptance letter from a tertiary institution in Belize, and a completed scholarship profile form.  The scholarship committee says applications will be assessed based on academic performance, leadership qualities, extracurricular involvement, financial need, professional potential, and commitment to conservation.  Interested students are being asked to submit all required documents as a single Word or PDF file to celso@belizezoo.org no later than Saturday, May 30.
