Belizean American Man Remanded After Pleading Guilty in Hit and Run That Injured Several

Police have formally charged a Belizean American man in connection with the hit-and-run traffic accident that injured several persons earlier this month at the corner of Cemetery Road and Euphrates Avenue in Belize City.  Forty-two-year-old sales representative Dwight Anthony Arthurs appeared before a Magistrate on Monday, February sixteenth, where he pleaded guilty to four offenses: driving without due care and attention, failing to report an accident, failing to stop and render aid, and failing to affix a registration plate. He was remanded to the Belize Central Prison pending sentencing set for Thursday.  The charges stem from the February 7 incident shortly after 8PM, when a maroon Ford Taurus reportedly made a wide turn into Euphrates Avenue and crashed into a hot-dog food stand and nearby customers before speeding away. Among those injured was sixty-two-year-old accountant Gerald Morris, who sustained abrasions to his arm and leg.  Love News had previously reported that police were seeking public assistance after surveillance footage showed the vehicle leaving the area without stopping to assist the injured.  Investigators later located a vehicle matching the description on King Street on Friday, February 13. The car had no license plate displayed and showed signs of damage. Police traced the vehicle to Arthurs at an Albert Street address, where they also discovered the license plate inside the car. Authorities note that while the food vendor requested no court action, the offenses fall under traffic and public safety laws, resulting in criminal charges.  Arthurs remains on remand awaiting sentencing.
