A powerful earthquake that struck northern Venezuela has left six Belizean students studying in the South American nation shaken, with one reportedly sustaining minor injuries after a section of a roof fell on her during the tremor. While initial reports indicate that all six students are safe, Love News understands that the incident has understandably caused concern among the Belizean contingent. Our newsroom is continuing to gather additional information as it becomes available. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been closely monitoring the situation. Chief Executive Officer Oscar Arnold told Love News that Belize’s diplomatic mission in Venezuela moved quickly to establish contact with the students following the earthquake. According to Arnold, Ambassador Annie Lou Burns spoke directly with the group and confirmed that, although they were understandably concerned by the experience, none reported being in a state of panic or immediate danger. One of the Belizean students also shared video footage with Love News from the aftermath of the earthquake, describing the frightening moments as the building shook and debris fell. The student said the experience was alarming.
According to CEO Arnold, Ambassador Burns conducted an exercise with these students in preparations for emergencies. He added that the students are aware that they should have ‘Go Bags’ prepared with medication copies of travel documents, food, chargers, among onther items. Arnold further told us that the ministry is cognizant that the ordeal has to be uneasy for them, assuming they are without electricity, and the process to access shelters will be a little slow and that in itself will be somewhat frustrating. He noted that with a forecast for heavy rains tonight will exacerbate the problem, and that they will remain in contact with them.
