- / Belizeans Encouraged to Make Small Lifestyle Changes as Diabetes Cases Rise
November 14th marks the annual observation of World Diabetes Day; a special date set to recognize the battle against one of the world’s leading causes of death. Data shows that diabetes is now the 3rd leading cause of death in Belize. In 2024, 204 deaths were recorded. With the continued struggle to spread awareness, Lynette Valerio, President of the Belize Diabetes Association, explains how Belizeans and their work can place can take action to help prevent diabetes.
Lynette Valerio, President of the Belize Diabetes Association: “So we at the Diabetes Association are calling on the business community to take an active role in investing in employee wellness programs, not only as an initiative, but as a national investment in our workforce. It is no secret that happier, engaged and healthy employees lead to increased productivity and ultimately contribute to the bottom line. We encourage businesses, if not yet done, to implement wellness programs in your offices. Allow employees time off for medical appointments. Encourage inter-office or inter-departmental sports competitions. Ensure that healthy food options and healthy snacks are available in your workplace. Offer diabetes education and screening initiatives to help employees manage their condition and prevent complications. Today on World Diabetes Day, it is not just about awareness, it is about action. Together, let’s create workplaces where employees can enjoy healthier lives and well-being.”
Valerio also urged the recently appointed cabinet and the special committee on cost of living to look deeply into the matter. This is to help create a good work balance and achieve the Sustainable Development Goal, which is “Good Health and Well-being. The theme for this year is “Diabetes and Well-being”.
