Belmopan Bus Terminal Gets Major Upgrade in $2.5M Investment

Commuters in Belmopan are now benefiting from a newly renovated bus terminal following its official unveiling yesterday by the Ministry of Transportation. The once-deteriorated facility has been transformed into a more modern and comfortable space, equipped with air conditioning, improved seating and upgraded bathroom facilities.  The work forms part of a two-point-five-million-dollar investment by the Government of Belize to renovate the bus terminals in Belmopan and Belize City. Minister of Transportation Dr. Louis Zabaneh says the condition of the Belmopan facility had deteriorated significantly over the years and no longer provided the standard of service commuters deserved. He says Belizeans should have access to safe and dignified public transportation facilities comparable to those available in other countries.

Dr. Louis Zabaneh, Minister of Transport: “Even when I came, as you asked, in here raining the buses would be through mud, the people would have to be hopping over pools of water. And certainly totally inhumane. Bathrooms in bad shape. The seating totally deteriorated now. Something that we can be proud of. And this is the kind of vision that we should have as a people. That we can attain these things that we might see abroad. But there’s no reason why we in Belize should not be able to come together and find the models and the formula to make it happen here.”

The ministry is now urging terminal staff, bus operators and commuters to take shared responsibility for protecting the facility and ensuring that the improvements continue benefiting the public for years to come.  The Government’s terminal-upgrade programme will continue in Belize City, where the existing facility is also scheduled for renovation.
