Belmopan Officer Injured During Altercation With Detainee

A police constable attached to the Special Patrol Unit is recovering after sustaining injuries during an altercation with a detainee in Belmopan earlier this month.  Reports indicate that Police Constable Alberto Choc was on special duty at the F.F.B. Stadium in Belmopan when the incident occurred.  According to PC Choc, he was approached by Corporal Budna and instructed to escort a male individual to the Belmopan Police Station for disorderly conduct. The man, described as being of clear complexion, with curly hair and approximately five feet five inches in height, was reportedly behaving in a disorderly manner.  PC Choc, along with PC Devin Guzman, placed the individual in the pan of a police vehicle. At the time, the man was not handcuffed. PC Choc was seated on the tire near the back glass of the police mobile, while PC Guzman sat on the vehicle’s rail guarding the detainee.  Police say the situation escalated when the detainee allegedly swung a punch toward PC Guzman’s face. PC Choc intervened, but the suspect reportedly pushed backward, causing both men to fall from the police vehicle. During the fall, PC Choc sustained what was later confirmed to be a dislocated left shoulder.  PC Guzman subsequently restrained the suspect and transported him to the Belmopan Police Station. The individual was later identified as Morris Aldana of Cotton Tree Village.  A medico-legal form was issued, and a doctor certified PC Choc’s injuries as harm. Police investigations into the aggravated assault are ongoing.
