Many mourned the loss and laid to rest Jerry “Big Jer” Lopez, a beloved street vendor widely regarded as an institution on Albert Street where he spent decades selling fresh seasonal fruits and treats to residents and visitors alike. The 52-year-old was a familiar face in the downtown core whose fruit cart was more than a business, it was part of the rhythm of daily life in the Old Capital. His offerings, including everything from craboo with condensed milk to apples, plums and grapes, drew customers not only for their quality but for Lopez’s warm greetings and easy conversation, making him a cherished fixture on city streets. Tragedy struck in late December when Lopez collapsed suddenly on King Street near his usual spot. Witnesses reported that he fell into a drain and bystanders quickly called for help. He was rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, but later passed away from complications. Today he was laid to rest and made his last trip down Albert Street in a hearse. City officials have remarked that the passing of Jerry marks the end of an era on Albert Street, reminding many that the true richness of Belize City lies not just in its buildings and businesses, but in the people whose lives quietly shape its character.
