FOLLOWING the recent track and field coaching changes at top boys’ high schools Calabar and Kingston College, there has been a new addition to the coaching staff at another powerhouse — Jamaica College.

After the appointment of Richard Smith as head coach at Kingston College and Julian Robinson at Calabar, Jamaica College has joined the party. Corey Bennett, the man behind the successful Hydel High female track and field programme and who was at the helm of the Calabar programme for the past three years, will now be the new sprint coach at the Old Hope Road-based Jamaica College.

Bennett was spotted on the school campus for a few days and a very reliable source at Jamaica College made the revelation yesterday to The Gleaner,

Bennett’s contract at Calabar was not renewed this year, as long-time field events coach Robinson, a past student of the institution, was elevated to the top post. Veteran coach Danny Hawthorne, who previously had a one-year stint at Calabar, will be back at the institution, once again taking charge of the sprinters.

Smith, who has been at Kingston College for years as an assistant coach in charge of the 400 metres programme and who guided the team to a hat-trick of wins at the Penn Relays in the 4x400m relay — has taken over the top job from Leford Grant, who led the programme for the past three years.
