Ricardo ‘Big 12’ Brown was expected to make his return to the ring on Friday at the the Queen’s Manor Event Centre in Brampton, Ontario, Canada.
But trainer Deiwth Frazer insists the boxer was not ready mentally to return to the ring, and hence his reason for postponing.
Brown lost to Russian Arslanbek Makhmudov in June by TKO in the first round, and Frazer revealed that Brown has not coped well with his first defeat, and that the fighter needs more time to gather himself before coming back to the ring.
“Big 12 fought in June and the loss was a very devastating one. It was a fight we think he was ready for. One we were prepared for.
“But unfortunately the quick KO was not foreseen by any of us. But it happened and since that time it has been difficult for him to deal with it,” Frazer disclosed.
He noted that it is not unusual for boxers to go through this phase, after tasting their first defeat. However, he said in Brown’s case it was the manner of the defeat that he has struggled with, and that a premature return could do more harm than good, and that the team is managing the situation as best as possible.
“When a lot of boxers lose their first fight it is a real struggle mentally for them. But we have been dealing with that.
“It was last week at training that I decided that I am going to take him off the card because right now, I didn’t see him focus.
“He has said his mind is not ready to get back in the ring. So the next time he gets back in the ring is really important. Because if he goes back in the ring and loses again, it could be the end of his career.”
“But 12 will be okay. The most important thing is, the team around him. And they are making sure he is supported and they put him in a position to be winning again.”
He revealed also that the boxer has some personal issues on his card at the moment, which makes things a lot more difficult. Nevertheless, the aim is to have him back in the ring in January.
