‘Big 12’ to fight Russian on June 27

Jamaica’s top heavyweight boxer, Ricardo ‘Big 12’ Brown, who has an impressive 12-0 record with 11 of those victories coming inside the distance, will return to the ring after an eight-month break, when he clashes with 35 year-old Russian-born fighter Arslanbek Makhmudov at the Centre Videotron in Quebec City, Canada, on Friday, June 27.

The fight, which will be over 10 rounds, will be one of the feature attractions on the card.

Brown, who is 34, is now based in Canada, and should have fought in March, but that fight was cancelled.

He told The Gleaner that he took the extra time off to get in some specialised training, and is in great condition for the fight, which will be his first over 10 rounds.

“My trainer Dewith Frazer and I spent some time in Florida, where I was able to get in some excellent work with several good heavyweights, and I am going to be well prepared and ready for this fight, which I expect to be my biggest challenge since I became a professional,” he said.

Frazer agreed with Brown that the camp was a good one.

“We sometimes have difficulty getting good sparring partners for Ricardo, who is a big man, but he was able to work with some good sparring partners in Florida, and we are happy for this,” Frazer said.

Makhmudo, who is also based in Canada, has an impressive and interesting 19-2 record. Eighteen of his victories were inside the distance and his two losses were technical knockouts.

The Brown camp told The Gleaner that they recognise and are paying attention to the fact that Makhmudo has excellent punching power, and is the first real opponent for Brown, who matches him in size and weight. Brown is 6’ 7 1/2 inches tall and Makhmudo is 6’ 5 1/2” tall, and both boxers are expected to weigh-in over 250 pounds. It will definitely be a clash of giants.

Brown’s camp is, however, satisfied that he will be ready for the big challenge. Frazer told The Gleaner that over the past few months Brown has been paying a lot of attention to his infighting and will be throwing more jabs, as a build-up for his crushing power punches.

“We expect this fight to be a big test for Ricardo, but I am confident that he will come through with flying colours,” he added.
