WESTERN BUREAU:

Last weekend history was made on the tracks of Italy, as the dynamic Jamaican duo of Senna Summerbell and Christopher Issa clinched victory in the opening race of the prestigious European Touring Car Championship (TCR).

Competing at the renowned Formula One Mugello circuit, the experienced Issa teamed up with the young and talented Summerbell, a rising star in motorsport.

Issa, a seasoned racer who first competed in 1976, made a stunning return to the track after 33 years away from professional racing. His teammate, 23-year-old Summerbell, carries a legacy of speed as the son of David Summerbell, one of Jamaica’s most celebrated race car drivers. Together, they navigated the intense competition, showcasing skill, precision, and an unbreakable team spirit.

Sharing his thoughts on their performance and representing Jamaica on the international stage, Senna described it as a “great feeling. I mean, had a little time compared to a lot of other competitors on the track, but to drive this track at full 100 per cent is an awesome feeling. It’s one you can’t describe”.

INCIDENT-FREE WEEKEND

Reflecting on the weekend, they added, “Lovely weekend, no incidents. Finished both races, pushed to the fullest. And we did the best we could.”

Issa expressed his pride, saying, “I’m very happy. I think Senna drove fantastically, and we are really happy for our country, Jamaica, to be representing here at TCR. As an excellent driver, Senna played a crucial role in our team’s success, ensuring that any limitations stemming from my racing hiatus were more than compensated for.”

Issa’s return to racing was motivated not only by his passion for the sport but also by his commitment to promoting Jamaica on the international stage. Previously, he had played a significant role in supporting young talent, sponsoring racing endeavours that showcased Jamaican drivers in European competitions.

Their car, proudly flagged in Jamaican colours, stood out on the European racing circuit, drawing attention and admiration, as the two continue to make their mark on the international racing scene, promising an even stronger performance in the future.

Competing against six other cars in their class, Summerbell and Issa demonstrated remarkable synergy. With their first win secured, the duo now sets their sights on the next race in Slovakia, scheduled for early June. As they continue their journey through the championship, they carry with them the pride of Jamaica and the hopes of motorsport enthusiasts eager to see them dominate the circuit.

Summerbell and Issa are expected to push their limits on the circuit, proving that experience and youthful talent make for an unbeatable combination in the world of racing.
