Blue Power Group Limited, a manufacturer of cake and bar soaps, is preparing to enter the market for liquid soaps within the next two years.
“Our end goal is to expand beyond just bar soaps. Our team is on the ground gathering all the consumer data required to give us the green light to go in that direction. But as trusted manufacturers, we know that customers know our brands are reliable, so we are actively working on introducing liquid soaps and, for sure, will be getting there within the next two years,” said General Manager Vishwanauth Tolan.
Blue Power Group is known mainly as a producer of cake laundry soap, including its flagship Blue Power brand, but it also produces bar soaps for personal care on its own behalf and for clients under contractual arrangements.
Speaking with the Financial Gleaner after Blue Power Group’s annual general meeting this week, Tolan said the devastation of western Jamaica by Hurricane Melissa emphasised the need for the company to be ready for sudden changes in demand for its products.
“There is a viewpoint that naturally there will be an uptick in business, but a lot of person have lost their jobs, and hotels have indicated that they will not be opened; so, as it pertains to consumer confidence, we are watching the space and are ready for any demand that comes our way,” he said.
Through the diversification, Blue Power’s intention is to grow its exports, which make up less than one-tenth of its business. At year ending April 2025, the company generated revenue of over $963 million, a new high, but saw its profit falter from $173 million to $137 million due to higher operating and raw materials costs.
“We currently export to numerous territories and our brands, whether those owned by Blue Power or the ones we make for third-party customers, are present in Europe, North America and the Caribbean,” said Tolan.
“We have some innovations, like the cake soap powder which evolves what cake soap is. It’s a viable product, and we are working with our customers to get the distribution and marketing right,” he said.
At the meeting, Blue Power Group Chairman Jeffrey Hall made note of the property recently acquired at 3 Victoria Avenue, across the street from the company’s headquarters in downtown Kingston.
He described the area as “one of the fastest-developing commercial areas of the city”, with plans for a high-rise complex as well as a PriceSmart membership shopping club that is soon to be developed nearby on South Camp Road.
“We believe very strongly that an attractive price was paid for the property and it presents expansion opportunities for us,” Hall said.
