Bonnick makes scoring look easy

Ardenne High School’s Mowan Bonnick is making waves in the ISSA Urban Schoolboy Basketball Competition, producing remarkable performances that have helped his team to stay in touch with defending champions and favourites, Campion College.

In his first year in the under-19 competition, Bonnick, who was outstanding among the under-16s last year, has carried his fine form.

His team has gone past the 100-point barrier twice in a row and Bonnick has impressed.

First, against Yallahs High, where his team won 112-28, Bonnick scored 39 points while pulling down 38 rebounds.

But he was even more impressive against Bridgeport High.

Against Bridgeport, Bonnick notched an incredible 94 points as part of a 158-26 win. The victory marked the highest points total by a team in the competition and Bonnick’s contribution the highest by an individual. He also had 39 rebounds, 13 blocks, and 13 steals in that game.

According to his coach, Basil Barrett, who has been coaching at Ardenne for 38 years, Bonnick could easily have gone past the 100-point mark but was taken out of the game early. Barrett believes the six-foot-five-inch player is special.

“Mowan is a very special talent. He can jump well and is an excellent inside and outside shooter. The sky is the limit for him. He is a future national senior prospect,” said Barrett.

Bonnick is pleased with his performances so far.

“I am very pleased with the work I have put in so far and the results I have gotten for myself and my team,” said Bonnick.

Now in fifth form, where he will be taking eight CXC subjects next year, he is looking forward to greater things.

“I would like to do well in my CXC exams, as my dream is to get a scholarship to a college overseas so I can continue playing the game at the highest level.”
