Paul Mahung, Punta Gorda Correspondent:Opening ceremony for exhibit of a book entitled Garifuna was held in Punta Gorda. The main speaker at Wednesday morning event was author of the book, Mortal Palacio.
Myrtle Palacio, Author: “A year ago, a booklet was launched entitled, “The Primer of the People Called Garifuna, Everything That You Should Want to Know.” Based on that book, the group who have come together to present this have come up with infographics on just the history itself. And it’s a traveling exhibit. And we’re going to every district town, including Belmapan and we’re partnering with the National Library Service, as well as all the hoses of culture in Belize to be able to bring it to Punta Gorda and the district towns and Belmopan as well. The Primer is all about Garifuna, written by a Garifuna. We do not have histories of our peoples. They’re all in tidbits. You cannot go to one place and find a history about Maya people, about Creole people. Garifuna people are well. All our little uh information that we gather are not documented and they’re not triangulated. And so we lose it. And with the Garifuna history, what we have here is the Belizean Garifuna from whence they came and their contribution to Belize to 1981. There were three leaders in the agitation to have a day recognized for Garifuna people. There were three. There was, of course, TV Ramos that we know about, but then there was Matteo Avaloy and there was Katarina Benguche.”
Paul Mahung, Punta Gorda Correspondent: The attentive audience at the ceremony included students from PG Methodist, St. Peter Claver, Toledo Community College Garifuna Drummers, representatives from Galen University, Chief Librarian, and staff of National Library Service.
