Book Week Fair Promotes Literacy and Belize’s Literary Industry

The Belize Book Sector Network (BBSN), in collaboration with the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH), is marking Book Week 2026 with a two-day book fair in Belize City, bringing together local and international voices under the theme “All Begins on Page One.”  The event, held yesterday and today at the House of Culture, is aimed at promoting literacy, creativity, and the growth of Belize’s literary industry. The fair opened on Wednesday with an official ceremony featuring a keynote address from Minister of State Ramon Cervantes, who underscored the importance of reading and cultural development in national progress. BBSN President Felin Caletano says the fair is tackling a key challenge for aspiring writers.

Cayetano explains that the fair’s publishing panel brings together independent authors, hybrid publishers, and traditional publishing representatives to guide writers through the different paths available and what happens after a book is completed. Among the featured authors, environmental themes are also taking center stage, with Dr. Gail Lash using her book Fire Tyga to teach children about fire safety after the 2024 wildfires, while reinforcing responsibility.

The Belize Book Sector Network says the initiative is part of a broader push to strengthen the local publishing industry and encourage more Belizeans, especially young people, to develop a habit of reading and storytelling. Activities continue through today, with a literary evening scheduled at the Mexican Cultural Institute, featuring poets and writers presenting work in English, Creole, and Spanish.
