Brooks urges calm despite loss to Leewards

Jamaica’s women cricketers suffered a narrow nine-run defeat to the Leeward Islands in their CWI T20 Blaze opener at Arnos Vale Playing Field on Tuesday, but head coach Shane Brooks is adamant there is no cause for panic.

Chasing a modest 109 for victory, Jamaica faltered to 99-8 in their 20 overs, failing to capitalise on several key moments in the match.

The Leeward Islands had earlier posted 108-5, a total Brooks believed was 20 runs above par.

“Yesterday’s game was not our best game,” Brooks acknowledged.

“It’s good to get your worst game out of the way early. Truth be told, we don’t want to be peaking too early.”

The coach revealed that the side was not at full strength, as the team had to manage “a few niggles” and minor injuries within the squad. He expects to field his best XI by the tournament’s third game.

Despite the setbacks, Brooks found positives, which, in truth, were few and far between.

“We showed glimpses that we can be very competitive. We should have chased down this 108, but it was not meant to be.”

With the tournament format allowing room to recover via bonus points, Brooks emphasised a game-by-game approach. The immediate focus shifts to a crucial clash against Barbados today.

Barbados themselves opened their campaign with a tense, three-wicket victory over Trinidad and Tobago, and Brooks is wary of their bowling attack.

“Barbados’ bowling attack is an experienced one, and they will be looking to utilise their strength.”

However, he believes Jamaica hold the edge in batting experience, with players like Chedean Nation, Rashada Williams, and Stafanie Taylor expected to lead the charge.

“Once they come to the party, we should be able to put a good score together.”

The coach outlined clear areas for improvement citing the team’s need to bowl straighter, minimise extras, and effect better strike rotation while batting.

“We will try to improve our game from Tuesday, and I’m looking forward to a better performance. The competition is set up so that we can make up with bonus points, and it is still early days. We’re not gonna panic.”
