To my brothers, fellow husbands and men who are trying every day to get this marriage thing right, let me put my hand around your shoulder for a moment and talk man-to-man.
Sometimes, you just have to stop.
Stop the deadlines. Stop answering the emails. Stop checking the phone. Stop worrying about the next meeting, the next assignment, the next dollar, the next problem that needs fixing.
Just stop.
Because somewhere in the middle of all the responsibilities of life, there is a woman who chose you and doesn’t always need you to fix something. Sometimes, she simply needs you. Your time. Your attention. Your affection. Your presence.
Brothers, there is something powerful about deliberately choosing your wife again and again. Marriage can become so busy that we start treating our wives like they will always be there, while everything else gets our best attention. We tell ourselves, “She knows I love her.” And perhaps she does.
But knowing you love her and feeling loved by you are not always the same thing.
That is why we need to pause.
Healthy marriages require intentionality. Love needs expression. Romance needs attention. Sometimes the most romantic thing a husband can say is not with his mouth at all.
It is simply, “Hon, tonight is about you. I cleared the time because I want to spend it with you.”
Please understand, brothers, I am not talking about spending a fortune. It doesn’t have to be spectacular or expensive. It doesn’t have to involve a plane ticket, a five-star restaurant or some elaborate surprise.
Sometimes romance is a simple dinner together. Sometimes it is going to the movies and sitting beside her with your hand in hers. Sometimes it is taking a walk together, holding hands and talking about absolutely nothing. Sometimes it is watching the sunset together, putting your arm around her and giving her that kiss that says, “After all these years, I still choose you.” Sometimes it is simply asking, “What would make you happy today?”
Then listen to her answer and do it.
Because brothers, one of the greatest gifts we can give our wives is validation.
Tell her you appreciate her. Tell her she is beautiful. Tell her you notice what she does. Tell her you are proud of her. Tell her you are grateful she is your wife. Don’t assume she knows. Tell her. Show her. Make her feel it.
After all, we live in a world where everybody is competing for our attention. Life keeps shouting, “Look over here!”
But your wife should never have to compete with everything else for a place in your life.
Prioritise her.
Make her a priority because she is your wife. I say this as a husband who is still learning.
After 32 years of marriage, I am still learning Mrs Heerah. One of the things I have discovered is that some of our most precious moments don’t require much at all. A day among the plants with Mrs H, and she’s good. There doesn’t need to be a fancy itinerary. Sometimes just being together, talking, laughing, walking around the plants, enjoying each other’s company, that is enough.
Those moments become memories. Those memories become part of the story of us.
Brothers, don’t underestimate the power of these little investments. A marriage is not strengthened only by the big moments. It is strengthened by the accumulation of thousands of little moments.
That is why I call it an ROI—Return on Investment.
Believe me, brothers, this is one investment where the dividends are priceless.
Invest your time and you will get deep romantic intimacy. Invest your attention and you may get connection. Invest your affection and you may get tenderness. Invest in romance and you may rediscover something you thought life had stolen from you. Invest in your wife and you strengthen your marriage.
But let me challenge us as husbands, don’t wait until there is a problem before you start investing.
Don’t wait for distance to develop. Don’t wait until communication becomes difficult. Don’t wait until she says, “We don’t spend any time together anymore.”
Don’t wait until your marriage is running on empty. Fill the tank while you’re still moving. So, brothers, fellow husbands, here is my encouragement,
Stop.
Look across the room at that woman who has walked this journey with you.
Take her hand. Look into her eyes, say, “Come. Let’s spend some time together.”
Take her somewhere. Or stay home. Make dinner. Order dinner. Watch a movie. Take that walk. Sit outside. Watch the sunset. Buy her something small just because you were thinking about her.
Just do something that speaks her love language.
Because at the end of the day, our wives don’t necessarily need a spectacular husband. They need a present husband. A husband who notices, who listens, who pursues, who validates. A husband who remembers that before there were deadlines, responsibilities and everything else demanding his attention, there was her.
After all these years, she deserves to know.
So brothers…
Stop. Prioritise. Pursue. Love.
Then watch what happens when you consistently invest in the woman you promised to love. Because a strong marriage isn’t built by accident. It is built one intentional moment at a time.
