Builders Get Hands-On Engineering Training to Improve Construction Practices

Builders and contractors are spending the week at ITVET strengthening their skills through a hands-on engineering training focused on improving construction practices and management. The training brings together technical instruction and practice, giving participants the opportunity to apply what they are learning directly on a construction site. One of the exercises involves building a prop house, which allows participants to put proper construction and engineering techniques into practice. At the start, the structure was unstable, but as the training progresses, participants are working to transform it into a stable house.

The training is not limited to construction techniques. Participants are also learning about management, including how projects should be planned, organized and carried out to ensure the work meets the necessary standards. The focus is ultimately on improving the quality and safety of construction particularly when it comes to homes that must be able to withstand hurricanes and other severe weather.  For builders like Denton Banner, the training is also an opportunity to strengthen skills that can be taken directly into the field.

The week-long initiative is a collaboration between the IDB, Belize City Council and the Ministry, with the aim of building the capacity of local builders and contractors through practical engineering and management training.
