Buju and Beres: memorable Intimate Concert moments

‘Who Say’

One of the most defining moments on Intimate in 2023 and again in 2025 has to be the genuine brotherly love, respect and camaraderie that Beres and Buju share.

It is patently obvious that they are friends, and their friendship has been a long time in the making. It pre-dates a Rastafarian Buju Banton. At 2:24 a.m. on Sunday, when Beres joined Buju on stage, it was a moment that fans at Plantation Cove had been waiting for … and they exhaled. What better tune for the two legends to sing than their legendary collab, Who Say (That big man don’t cry). One of the hit songs from Buju’s 1993 Donovan Germain-produced album, Mr. Mention, Who Say incorporates a part of Beres’s Falling in Love, and, in that moment, the entire Plantation Cove fell in love with them all over again.

“Big tune now and for centuries to come,” is what one fan wrote about the song in the comments section of a YouTube video. Another comment under the same video, dated 12 years ago, said: “Ooooh! memories! My husband left for a younger woman. A year later he gave me this record and asked to come back. I kept the record, threw him back. Best decision I ever made.”

Mr Mention Trivia: Ten of the album’s tracks were official club hits in their day; Buju Banton is also known as ‘Mr Mention’.

Style moments from backing vocalists

As veteran dancehall artiste Wickerman stated, “Intimate is a very special show”, and how true was that! The backing vocalists for both Beres and Buju had their big style moments that had patrons going ‘Wow!” It is well known that they all can sing, and they are certainly no slouches when it comes on to dressing either; but on Saturday, they took it up a notch or two with their perfectly coordinated, sassy outfits. Team Beres made pinstripes their own, and topped off their outfits with hats, while Team Buju opted for solid black and white tops and pants, with one pants foot stylishly shorter than the other.

That Maggi soup

Maggi was one of the sponsors of Intimate and they brought their entire kitchen to Plantation Cove. Patrons were offered free cups of chicken soup, courtesy of the brand, and, of course, their kitchen hummed with activity the entire night. Yes, it was really tasty. How many cups of soup did Maggi hand out? Nuff.

Buju’s Favourite Song

Who would have thunk it? Buju Banton shared with fans at Intimate that his favourite song is the popular gospel tune Goodness of God, and he sang it on stage. Perhaps there’s a poignant story somewhere there.
