Buju Banton Threatens to Sue Wayne Wonder and Wife

Jamaican reggae icon Buju Banton is preparing to take legal action against fellow entertainer Wayne Wonder and his wife, following a public dispute over songwriting credit for the classic track “Murderer.”

The conflict, which escalated online last week, centers on claims made by Wayne Wonder, whose given name is Von Wayne Charles, and his wife, Jacqueline Charles. The couple was reportedly served with a formal legal notice and given five days to respond.

Tensions intensified after an audio recording, allegedly featuring Jacqueline Charles, surfaced on social media. The recording, shared via Wayne Wonder’s platform and later reposted by a local entertainment outlet, included what Buju Banton’s legal team describes as damaging and unfounded allegations.

In a statement released on behalf of the artist, born Mark Myrie, his legal and management representatives strongly rejected the claims, stating, “the statements in question falsely allege the commission of serious criminal acts. these allegations are entirely untrue, without factual basis, and have caused significant reputational harm to our client both in jamaica and internationally.”

The statement confirmed that attorneys have demanded the immediate removal of the content, along with “a full and unequivocal retraction and public apology.” It also warned that the continued spread of the allegations across digital platforms is being closely monitored.

“our client reserves all rights and will pursue all available legal remedies against any individual or entity involved in the publication or further dissemination of these defamatory claims,” the statement added.

Legal representation for Banton is being led by Rita Allen-Brown, who is expected to spearhead any potential court proceedings if the matter is not resolved promptly.

The statement further emphasized the artist’s longstanding reputation, noting, “buju banton has built a global reputation over decades through his music, cultural impact, and advocacy. these false allegations stand in stark contrast to that legacy and will be addressed with required gravity.”

The dispute has sparked widespread discussion within Jamaica’s entertainment community, as fans and industry figures weigh in on the controversy surrounding one of dancehall’s most influential recordings.
