Bus operators to increase fares later this month

Bus commuters across the country could soon be paying slightly higher fares, as Cabinet has agreed to a proposed increase in the per-mile rate for independent bus operators.  Under the new arrangement, operators would move from the current 14 cents per mile to 18 cents per mile, a shift that is expected to bring fares more in line with those under the National Bus Company.  President of the Belize Bus Association, Phillip Jones, says the proposal is not yet finalized, as operators must first agree to and formally accept the offer. Once approved, the new fare structure could take effect later this month, with a tentative implementation date set for April 24.  Jones also took the opportunity to thank John Briceño for reconsidering the proposals put forward by the association, noting that the decision reflects a willingness on the part of government to engage with the concerns of independent operators.  

Jones explained that for commuters, the increase will be modest. For example, passengers traveling between Belize City and Ladyville could see an estimated fifty-cent increase per trip.  According to Jones, while the adjustment may appear small, it is necessary to help operators cope with the rising cost of fuel, which has been placing increasing pressure on the transportation sector.  He added that the Belize Bus Association is scheduled to meet on Sunday to discuss the proposal and determine the way forward, including how services will be maintained for commuters nationwide.
