Bus runs for commuters resume operations tomorrow

The Belize Bus Association says its members will continue providing bus services come tomorrow, as they await a Cabinet decision over more diesel subsidy. The Association had previously warned that operators could suspend services if the subsidy, which expired in July, was not reinstated. Last week, the Ministry of Transportation informed the BBA that a Cabinet paper would be prepared for consideration on August 25. However, the Association says Minister Louis Zabaneh requested additional time today to prepare and table the proposal at Cabinet’s meeting on Tuesday, September 1.  The BBA says its members unanimously agreed to continue operating, describing the decision as an additional sacrifice in the interest of the thousands of Belizeans who rely on public transportation daily.  The Association says it initially wrote the Minister on July 15, before the subsidy expired, to allow the Government time to address the rising cost of diesel and avoid any disruption. It is now urging Cabinet to treat the matter with urgency and deliver a clear solution that can be implemented immediately following next week’s meeting.
