Cabinet Approves Bus Fuel Subsidy Through March 2027

The Cabinet has officially approved a request from the Belize Bus Association to extend the fuel subsidy for public transportation operators. In a official letter addressed to association president Philip Jones, Chester Williams, Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Constitution and Religious Affairs, Indigenous Affairs, and Transportation, confirmed that the government will continue providing relief to help maintain affordable fare rates for the public.  Under the approved terms, the subsidy will remain at $2.00 per gallon and will take effect at the conclusion of the previous subsidy cycle. The relief measure is set to run through the end of the fiscal year on March 31, 2027, provided that fuel prices do not drop below $12.00 per gallon.  To ensure proper oversight and evaluate the effectiveness of the relief, Cabinet has instituted a review period every two months. The Ministry of Transportation will monitor fuel prices alongside operator compliance, submitting bi-monthly reports to Cabinet to determine whether the subsidy remains necessary. Participating operators must continue to meet all established eligibility criteria to remain qualified for the funding.
