Cabinet ministers have expressed concern over threats made against Defence Minister Wayne Sturge, as security agencies continue to investigate a reported assassination plot.

In an interview during a tour of Besson Street Police Station, Minister of Justice Devesh Maharaj said, “We are very concerned. All of us are very concerned. This is our colleague and a minister, but there’s only so much we can say at this point in time. I trust you will understand that the matter seems to be under investigation and they’re taking it very seriously.”

Minister of Homeland Security Roger Alexander added, “Minister Sturge would have consulted with the relevant agencies. Once a threat comes forward, you would also brief your family accordingly. The security arrangement, I would not want to discuss too much. However, we are doing everything we can to ensure the safety of Minister Sturge and his family.”

Police and military intelligence agencies have reportedly identified a “real and present danger” to Sturge and his relatives, prompting heightened security measures. The threat has been linked to his refusal to install hand-picked personnel in state and constituency-level positions. Among the alleged conspirators are a lawyer with close ties to the ruling UNC administration, two illegal quarry operators, and a senior military officer.
