CCCADI and Lincoln Center Present AfriCarnaval: an Evening Honoring Calypso Rose and the Carnival Traditions of Brazil and T&T
The Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute (CCCADI) and Lincoln Center are honored to present AfriCarnaval, an evening celebrating the Carnival traditions of Brazil and Trinidad & Tobago. The night will honor Calypso Rose, the undisputed Queen of The Road. On July 11th, 2026, from 6pm – 8pm, the concert will take place on The Dance Floor at Josie Robertson Plaza (10 Lincoln Center Plaza, NY). The event is free and open to the public.
AfriCarnaval will feature performances from Silvana Magda & Viva Brazil, Something Positive, 2J & Friends, and a special surprise guest you won’t want to miss!
As CCCADI continues to celebrate its milestone 50th Anniversary Year, AfriCarnaval marks a historic, full-circle moment: it brings us back to the Carnival in New York program series that CCCADI presented at Lincoln Center throughout the 1980s and 90s, which highlighted the diversity of Carnival traditions throughout the African Diaspora.
AfriCarnaval, presented as part of Lincoln Center’s Summer for the City program series, carries that legacy forward, celebrating Carnival as a living practice of culture, joy, and resistance.
The evening honors Calypso Rose, born in Tobago, where she began singing at the age of fifteen. In 1978, she became the first woman to win the national Calypso Monarch competition in Trinidad & Tobago, which was known as the National Calypso King competition until Calypso Rose showed up. Calypso Rose has won more honors and medals than any other living Calypsonian and is known as the Queen of Calypso worldwide.
Throughout the event, CCCADI will be hosting a Ọjà Marketplace table featuring 50th Anniversary merchandise, and a Community Archiving Lab for Culture and Justice pop-up, showcasing archival materials of an ongoing 47-year collaborative relationship with Lincoln Center, including video of a performance by Calypso Rose in 1994.
